Southampton, Store Support Office

We believe anyone can improve their home to make life better. From our Southampton Store Support office (SSO) we equip our stores, our people, and our whole business with everything it takes to help our millions of customers create a home they’ll love. Join us as a Head of Data Visualisation & Automation and you’ll be a big part of this.

Role Purpose:

The Head of Data Visualisation & Automation is a senior leadership role responsible for transforming how B&Q designs, delivers and uses reporting, insight and decision tools. The role moves the organisation beyond traditional BI into product-led data solutions — where dashboards, metrics and automation are treated as scalable products that actively shape business decisions. You will define how reporting is conceived, built and evolved at B&Q, introducing modern data product practices, raising visual and analytical standards, and expanding the impact of data across every function. .

What's the job?

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Establish product-led ways of working
Implement core data product development practices, including clear product roadmaps, release management, service ownership and prioritised backlogs. Embed structured approaches such as user personas, user stories, wireframing and iterative delivery to ensure products are designed intentionally rather than built reactively.
  • Transform how requirements are defined
Standardise and broaden business engagement through strong partnerships with functions across B&Q. Shift demand away from feature requests toward clearly defined value outcomes, ensuring reporting solves real decision problems and delivers measurable impact.
  • Drive innovation in metrics and analytical thinking
Introduce new  metrics, segmentations etc within reporting, helping the organisation adopt richer and more forward-looking measures of performance. Champion analytical concepts that may not yet be widely understood, making them accessible and actionable for business users: such as predictive and diagnostic outputs rather than only descriptive ones
  • Raise data visualisation standards
Set and enforce best-in-class visualisation principles across all reporting outputs, improving clarity, storytelling, usability and trust. Ensure dashboards are intuitive, consistent and designed for decision-making, not just information display.
  • Partner across the business to unlock efficiency
Work directly with commercial, operational and central functions to consolidate reporting, remove duplication and uncover implicit or unmet data needs. Use data products to simplify processes and improve organisational efficiency.
  • Shape the future of decision automation
Engage with Kingfisher Group and external partners to bring new thinking into B&Q, evolving reporting toward decision-oriented tooling such as pricing, range optimisation and operational automation. Help define the transition from insight delivery to embedded, automated decision support.

What we need:

Required Skills & Experience:

  • You have experience leading data visualisation or BI teams in a customer-focused organisation, ideally within retail or another complex commercial environment. You understand how reporting and insight support real business decisions and operational performance.
  • You bring a strong technical understanding, with working knowledge of SQL, cloud data platforms and modern reporting tools such as Power BI. You understand how data models, automation and workflows are designed and delivered, and how good governance, data quality and standards underpin trusted reporting without needing to be a hands-on specialist in every technology.
  • You have experience improving reporting practices and introducing more structured ways of working, including clear ownership, delivery processes and quality standards. You are familiar with agile delivery practices, and recognise the importance of scalable, well-managed data products.
  • You are commercially minded and outcome-focused, able to translate business needs into valuable solutions rather than feature requests. You are comfortable influencing senior stakeholders, challenging constructively and aligning work to measurable business value.
  • You combine analytical thinking with strong storytelling and communication skills, helping others understand data and act on it. You are curious, collaborative and motivated by solving real business problems.
  • Above all, you are a people-focused leader who builds strong teams, encourages new ideas and creates an environment where individuals and capabilities can grow, while pushing the organisation to think differently about how data drives decisions.

What's in it for me?

As part of a great team, you’ll be valued for who you are. We’re committed to making B&Q more diverse and representative of the communities we serve, where everyone can feel they belong and have equal opportunities. You will have access to a range of networks that represent our colleagues and allies and help us to continue to put diversity and inclusion at the heart of our business.

We also recognise that wellness means different things to different people, and we want to help colleagues be at their best and feel well by offering a range of benefits to help you. As well as a competitive salary, our benefits package includes an award-winning pension scheme, bonus, ShareSave options, 6.6 weeks holiday, payroll giving, an Employee Assistance Programme, shopping discounts, colleague wellbeing benefits and lots more!
