What's the job?

Role Purpose:

Our Trading Law Advisors play a very important role at B&Q helping us to adhere to relevant (UK and Ireland) trading laws and regulations, in an evolving consumer and compliance regulatory landscape.

This is a varied and commercially focused role, partnering with stakeholders at all levels across B&Q, including our retail, trade, digital and marketplace businesses. You will provide pragmatic legal and regulatory advice that supports business objectives while helping to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and maintaining customer trust.

The Trading Law Advisor supports both existing operations and new strategic initiatives, influencing decision-making to identify practical and proportionate solutions to regulatory and legal risks. The role plays a key part in the development, review and implementation of policies, processes and customer propositions, helping to embed a culture of compliance across the organisation.

A core aspect of the role is supporting the effective management of regulatory incidents and investigations, coordinating responses to regulatory enquiries and enforcement activity, and working with stakeholders to mitigate risk, implement corrective actions and drive continuous improvement. Through proactive partnership and trusted advice, the Trading Law Advisor helps shape compliant business outcomes while protecting the reputation of B&Q and its customers.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

  • Partner and protect: Taking an agile and pragmatic approach, help pre-empt and navigate issues down the line, providing practical solutions and simplifying complexity.
  • Manage the response to regulatory enquiries, investigations, referrals and enforcement activity.
  • Support the development of policies, controls and governance frameworks that demonstrate effective regulatory due diligence.
  • Provide timely, commercially pragmatic risk-based advice on trading law/regulatory compliance matters and influence decision-making by translating complex legal requirements into clear, practical business advice.
  • Proactively identify, assess and prepare the business for emerging legal and regulatory risks via regular horizon scanning.
  • Assist in the management of escalated disputes and legal claims.
  • Work with external advisers and trade associations where appropriate, building constructive relationships with regulators, Primary Authority partners and industry bodies.
  • Participate in strategic project working groups and business initiatives so that compliance considerations are embedded at an early stage.
  • Support senior leaders in understanding and managing material legal and regulatory risks.
  • Develop and deliver legal and regulatory compliance training.
  • Promote awareness of legal obligations and good practice across the business.
  • Assist the Head of Legal & Regulatory Compliance with all other ad hoc related matters as required, working with colleagues across the wider Kingfisher Legal network where required.

What we need:

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Strong experience of consumer law frameworks and working within a regulatory authority or experience managing the response to regulatory enforcement.
  • Experience of working within a retail, eCommerce, online platform, marketplace, FMCG or other consumer-facing environment.
  • Ability to confidentially deal with a broad range of complex legal and regulatory compliance issues
  • Strong team player with the ability to work effectively across the wider Legal & Regulatory Compliance team and broader business functions, sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues and contributing to the delivery of collective team objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively to build understanding and trust with stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent drafting skills with the ability to effectively draft a wide range of communications for various audiences
  • Positive, resilient self-starter with the ability to influence upwards
  • Highly organised problem solver with the ability to prioritise a complex, high-volume workload under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Strong stakeholder partnering and influencing skills
  • Sound judgement and the ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives
